Welcome Algebra II students

You are welcome to check out any of the links on this blogspot. The ones you'll find most useful are the ones in the right hand column. Khan Academy is a great resource for any high school course (math and otherwise). MathTV.com is strictly for math.

For military students, there are two other sites (soar at home and tutor.com)under easy access, where you can get free math help especially if your military family member is deployed.

Don't forget we offer before and afterschool help in room 204 (me) , 202 (Mr. Johnson) and Miss Reece (16).

Homework Instructions

The instructions were cut off from the top of your homework sheet.
Graph r = 5 theta. (Use 10 different values) and identify the type of curve it represents ie: cardioid, rose with n petals, lemniscate, Archimedes sprial.

My answers will be worked out using the unit circle.

Extra Credit will be posted on Saturday afternoon.

Thursday, May 12, 2011

Polar Quiz

Friday's homework will include problems on deMoivre's Theorem and review questions for Monday's quiz. Monday we will go over and answer questions about the review, then quiz. If you are not present Friday, get a friend to pick up the review. If you aren't present Monday plan to take the make up Wednesday after school.

Review packets for the final exam will be given out most likely next Wednesday.

Polar Graphs

This is a picture of the Northen Lights from Anchorage, Alaska. The dust in the earth's atmosphere gets electrically charged and is carried toward the magnetic pole. It is their movement along the lines of the magnetic field which we see as the Northern Lights.

I started a new list of useful links for our work with polar graphs. Thevery first one is of polar graph paper. If you need some you can click on this link. Just tell it to mark degrees or radians and to print a black image, then click download. You can find the print command under "file". This will make sense when you open the page.

3rd Quarter Extra Credit

The extra credit is finally here!!!!

Please note the due date: the Monday we come back from break. At the bottom of the questions page it asks you to circle which category you want me to put in the extra credit. Some of you have really good test averages and some have strong quiz averages. Choose the category that helps you most.

One final note, please do not read the questions and then google answers. I recognize when this is done and this time will not give you credit for the assignment if that's the path you choose. Happy trails, don't forget to have lots of fun and rest on your break

Answers can be emailed to me at cindytaylor@ccs.k12.nc.us.

Upcoming Quiz & Test

Next Tuesday (April 5) is a trig quiz.
The topics for it include:
-identifying the quadrant/axis where the terminal side of an angle is
-finding coterminal angles
-converting decimal degrees into degrees, minutes, seconds
-converting from degrees, min, seconds into decimal degrees
- converting degree measures into radians
-converting radians into degrees
- finding exact values
-finding approximates values of trig functions
-finding angles when the trig ratio is given

On the Friday(April 8) will be trig test #2:
The topics for this one are:
graphing trig functions and solving right triangles. Identifying period and amplitude.

Tuesday, March 29, 2011

Tuesday's Nutshell

Today we learned how to graph the parent functions of sine and cosine. We defined period and amplitude. The link here addresses this set of notes: Graphing Sine/Cosine and Amplitudes

The homework is more on yesterday's notes. Finding the exact values of the six trig functions using the unit circle.

Reminders: Thursday is the first trig test of this unit. You are responsible for recreating the unit circle. You will have to label the axes, positive & negative degrees measures, positive & negative radian measures. On a third empty circle you will have to mark the coordinates of the points where the terminal side of the angle intercepts the circle. On your index card you can have the special right triangles and the signs of points assocoiated with each quadrant.
On Friday you have a log & exponential functions requiz. If you are not present that day, there will not be a makeup. Be there or accept the quiz grade you already have. There will be no exceptions to this.

Monday's Nutshell

The first two links are notes with sample problems similar to what we did in class today.
Reference Angles  Trig functions & Exact Values

These two videos are about the same thing. The presenter doesn't show the pattern we talked about in class to make memorization easier but he does give agood explanation of why it works. You will need to watch both videos: Exact Trig Values 1  Trig functions & Exact Values 2

We will have our first trig test on Thursday. You will be recreating the unit circle from scratch. You will need to be able to do today's material for Thursday's test. Also the requiz on logs and exponentials will on Friday.

In a nutshell #1

I just found these two links and love them. If you were out on Tuesday check them out.
Angle measurement

Radian Measure

Practice 1  & Practice 2 If you are absent and can't get the worksheet from today. Do these and I'll count it. This is not an option to those present in class today.

Trig and Other Cool Math Stuff

ten-ways-to-survive-the-math-blues
If you're struggling with precal (and sooner or later we all struggle with math) check out this guys advice--it's good stuff.

Many of you are going on field trips over the next few weeks and it's so important that you are able to keep up with what we're doing in class. I'm posting on the right side of the blog "Nifty Trig Stuff". Most of them are interactive tutorials.

If you prefer videos to reading, check out the "Precal tutorials" under math videos--scroll and select trig.
Enjoy :)

Domain of Functions

The following link is about the Domain of the function. If you are still struggling with these concepts you may want to check them out. There are three video clips. Watch one or all if you need to:
The first talks about piecewise functions and why domain is important.
The second talks about functions expressed with radicals and fractions and the why domain is an issue for these. Please note that the presenter uses both set and interval notations. We will begin to use these in class shortly.
The third video is on how to find the domain using algebra.
